One of the best parts of coming back to school is the return of high school football.  Friday nights are an event in small towns across the country and Mount Vernon is no exception.  Mountaineer Stadium is the gathering place for the community any Friday night there is a home game.  I love hearing and watching the Band, seeing the performances of our Cheer Squad and Coquettes, and cheering on the Mt'Neers as they compete to represent our district.

Our home opener this year is surrounded by even more special events than usual.  First, the Athletic Booster Club is sponsoring their annual tailgate from 5:00-6:00 in the High School Commons with pulled pork sandwiches, memberships, and merchandise available.  Several clubs and organizations will also be selling spirit items and sponsoring games outside the Commons:

Piano Smash - Show Choir Boosters
Funnel Cakes - Band Boosters
Andy's Frozen Custard - Coquettes
Basketball Toss - Girl's Basketball
Thundersticks - HS Track
Face Painting - HS Cheerleaders

Also this Friday our matchup against Springfield Catholic has been designated as the KSPR Game of the Week.  KSPR will have a reporter and chief meteorologist on site Friday night with live pre-game reports at 4:00, 6:00, and 6:20 as well as post-game reports at 10:20 and on the O-Zone Highlight Show airing at 11:30 PM.  We need lots of Mt'Neer support "Bleeding Green" during their broadcasts!

There will be a "Taste of the Town" segment featuring The Mountaineer shown on the 10 PM KSPR newscast Thursday and again at 4:00 Friday afternoon.

Friday night presents an opportunity to recognize our 2016 Spring Softball State Champion Lady Mountaineers during Halftime and celebrate their historic achievements.  They will be receiving their State Championship rings during the Halftime ceremony.

Finally, Mediacom will be televising Friday's game with replays being shown at 3 PM Saturday and at 7 PM on Sunday and Monday.

If all of those events are not enough to encourage you to make plans to attend this Friday, come out just to support MVHS student-athletes and marching band students who have been working so hard this summer preparing to make our fall season an exciting one!  Hope to see everybody in attendance Friday night!
