The Mount Vernon R-V School Board held its regular meeting on Thursday, October 22nd.  Below are some items of interest:

  • During the Superintendent's Report we discussed the District Attendance numbers for September.  The overall attendance rate for the District was 95.67% (which is very good) and our average daily attendance was 1341 students.
  • The Board was also presented with the Official September Membership count.  This number is used to calculate the allocation of State Assessed Railroad and Utilities Revenue.  It is calculated by measuring the enrollment of full-time students on the last Wednesday in September.  Our membership count this year was 1396 students down 33 from last year.
  • The Board recognized MVHS Senior Mary Spencer who was selected to represent Missouri in the National Association for Music Education All-National Honor Ensemble this November in Grapevine, TX.  Mrs. Rene Spencer, MVHS Vocal Music Director, was on hand to explain the selection procedure. To qualify for this national honor students had to first be chosen as an All-State Choir member and then audition by video.  Mary was one of only 4 students from Missouri selected to participate. Mary's trip was officially approved by the Board and all in attendance congratulated her with a round of applause.
  • Many members from the Professional Development Committee were present to provide information on the Teacher Kindness Challenge held on October 10th.  Each team leader described the local businesses visited and the activities which provided such a rewarding experience for all involved.  It was an outstanding recap of a wonderful day.  A link is provided below for viewing a picture slideshow from the day's activities.
  • Mrs. Eads, Lisa Barnes, and Cheryl Rone were present to report on the Mount Vernon Parents as Teachers Program. Mrs. Rone spoke about some of the features of the program and Mrs. Barnes covered the aspects of a typical home visit.  Parents as Teachers is a program facilitated by the state of Missouri which provides resources for children birth-school age.  Parent Educators make home visits or use school facilities to meet with parents to offer assistance.  The program:
    • helps to improve parental confidence and skills to support their child's education and development before entering school
    • provides periodic screenings to increase parent's understanding of their child's developmental progress
    • alerts parents to possible delays and connects them with early interventions to help students be ready to be successful when they enter school
  • Mrs. Eads and Amanda Bradshaw reported to the Board on the District's Special Education Program and Placement Rates.  The Local Compliance Plan for Mount Vernon R-V was rated at the highest level again by DESE.  This is a great complement to the Department as new regulations make this more difficult to attain each year.  Mrs. Bradshaw did an outstanding job of helping the Board understand the process by which a student goes from being identified as struggling to implementation of an IEP or other intervention to help them succeed.
  • Finally, the Board adopted 2 revised policies related to Bullying and Student Discipline and one new policy related to Hazing.  For more information please review the more detailed post entitled "Bullying Policy Changes."

The next meeting of the Mount Vernon R-V Board of Education will be Thursday, November 17th at 7:30 PM in the Middle School Board Room.
