On Thursday, August 25th the Mount Vernon R-V School Board held the annual levy hearing and regular school board meeting.  Below are some items of interest:

  • The Board certified the local levy for the 2016-17 year at $2.75.  This has been the levy for Mount Vernon R-V since 2005.  The levy is the lowest in the surrounding area and represents a shared commitment of the Board and Administration to keep the tax burden on our patrons at a level as low possible by running the district efficiently and responsibly.
  • The Board heard the Fall Sports preview from coaches of Girls Tennis, Girls Golf, and Football.  Volleyball had a home game last night so Mrs. Schmutz sent a report ahead of time.  All coaches reflected on the commitment of their athletes through the offseason, reported on community service projects their athletes were engaged in on behalf of the team, and previewed the upcoming season.
  • Mrs. West and Mrs. Garoutte reported on a new Vision Tutoring Program being implemented at the Elementary School through Title I funding.  This is a new evaluation program to evaluate the functional vision of students.  Functional vision is the set of skills used to track smoothly, change focus from target to target, adequately perceive what is seen, and maintain visual focus.  All these skills can negatively impact reading ability if issues exist.  The Vision Intervention Program uses comprehensive screening and tutoring techniques to target, find and improve these skills while students are at school.  For this year all 1st Grade students will be screened and tutoring will be available for those who would benefit.
  • The contract between the City of Mount Vernon and the school district was approved for the School Resource Officer position.  While the School Resource Officer remains an employee of the City of Mount Vernon, we appreciate their dedication to the safety of our students by designating one officer on duty in the school district 5 days a week during the day.  This contract approval was an update to the previous agreement between the city and school district.
  • The Board approved the Mission Statement, Philosophy, and Goals for the 2016-17 School Year with no changes.  These are included in our CSIP plan.
  • The Board adopted the Professional Development Plan as written by the Professional Development Committee.  This plan drives professional improvement of all certified staff for the year and requires annual approval.

The next meeting of the Mount Vernon R-V School Board is set for Thursday, September 22nd at 7:30 PM in the Middle School Board Room.
