May 2023 Board Meeting Report

The Mount Vernon R-V Board of Education held its Regular Meeting on Thursday, May 18.  Below are some items of interest:

 

The Board recognized Jessica Daugherty as the District MV-MVP for the 2022-2023 school year.   

  • Mrs. Daugherty is a Counselor at the Elementary School and was our MVP for the month of October.  

Our attendance percentage was 93.39% for the month of April and our seated ADA was 1,337.22. 

  • This represents an increase in seated ADA from this time last year and is the highest seated ADA for April since 2018.

The Board was introduced to our MVHS School Board Advisors for the 2023-2024 school year.

  • The MVHS Student Council, with the help of their sponsor Mrs. Johnston, sought out students who were willing to serve as a liaison between the School Board and MVHS students.
  • This program grew out of ideas included in the District’s CSIP plan as part of an effort to increase collaboration and communication between the MVHS student body and the School Board.
  • A faculty committee was formed and recommended three students to serve in this role in the upcoming school year.
    • Natalie Barker, Junior
    • Ryleigh Misemer; Junior
    • Jaden Wilson; Senior
  • These students will begin their time as advisors in August to coincide with the beginning of the school year.

MVHS Spanish Teacher Catalina Silva was present with some of her upper-level Spanish students seeking permission to take members of her Spanish III and Spanish IV classes to Costa Rica in June 2024.

  • Mrs. Silva and some of her students offered a presentation on the proposed trip including several educational benefits and fundraising ideas to help pay the cost.
  • The Board approved the trip and the hard work of making the trip happen begins.


Tammy Brashers presented on behalf of the CTA Salary/Welfare Committee.  See attached presentation for additional information.

 

Campus administrators shared highlights from the Building Improvement Plans created in conjunction with the District’s Continuous Improvement Plan.  

  • Each principal highlighted some of their goals for improvement at the building level.
  • These plans are required aspects of the CSIP to be submitted to DESE as part of MSIP 6.
  • Please see the attachment which includes BIPs from each building.

The Board received the following information:

 

Grant Berendt has submitted a resignation letter from his teaching position as an Alternative Education Teacher at the High School effective at the end of this year.

  • Mr. Berendt joined the District in 2018 and spent the past five years teaching at the High School.

Annette Hudson has submitted a resignation letter from her Paraprofessional Position at the Elementary School.

  • Mrs. Hudson joined the District in 2020 and has spent the past three years as a classroom paraprofessional.

 

Joy Maberry has submitted a retirement letter from his position as Science Teacher at the High School effective at the end of this year.

  • Mr. Maberry joined the District in 1992 and spent the past 31 years as a Mt’Neer.
  • Mr. Maberry taught Science at both the Middle School and High School as well as Weights at the High School during his career with Mount Vernon.
  • Mr. Maberry was also a long-time coach in the Football program (21 years) serving in both an Assistant and Head Coaching role and also coached Girls Basketball at the High School and Middle School level and Boys Basketball at the Middle School.

Stephanie Smith has submitted her resignation as a Counselor at MVHS.

  • Mrs. Smith joined the District in 2019 and has spent the past four years as a Counselor at MVHS.

Marla Stewart has submitted her resignation as the Director of Summit.

  • Mrs. Stewart has been serving in this role for the past two years.

 

 

 

Kristy Fox will be remaining in her part-time position at MVHS teaching Math & Science.

 

Kalli Robison is moving from her Classroom Paraprofessional Position at MVMS into a Secretary Position at MVMS.

 

Chance Cornell will be taking on the role of supervisor for the Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) Program starting next year after spending the past two years as the ISS Supervisor and Attendance Officer at MVHS.

 

Michelle Rust will be moving into the vacant High School Counselor position after several years of teaching Health and PE and MVHS.

 

The Board hired the following Professional Staff:

 

Kimberly Iman for a Second Grade Teaching Position in the 2023-2024 school year.

  • Mrs. Iman has spent the past four years teaching Second Grade at Monett Elementary with six years spent previously at Pierce City Elementary.
  • This is to replace two vacated Elementary Paraprofessional positions which will not be filled.

Jamie Wasson-Jones for a Special Education Teaching Position split between the Intermediate School and Middle School.

  • This is to replace Amy Smith who will now be teaching three hours of Science and one hour of Math at the High School in addition to her Process Coordinator duties at the High School.
  • Mrs. Jones taught in Mount Vernon for two years, joining the District in 2013 and leaving her position at the end of the 2014-2015 school year.
  • In the interim she taught in Arkansas and most recently in the Ozark (MO) School District.

The Board also hired the following Support Staff positions:

 

Kiley Alumbaugh and Ashley Ragsdale were hired to share duties as Co-Directors of the Summit After-School Program.

 

Brittany Courtois for a vacant Middle School Volleyball position.

 

Jeanne Justice for the vacant Nurse Position at the Middle School.

  • Mrs. Justice is an LPN with nine years of nursing experience at Lawrence County Manor, Intrepid Home Health Care, and Advantage Nursing.
  • This is to replace Mrs. Robbins who will be moving to the ELC.
  • With the ELC’s relatively small enrollment, it will allow for Mrs. Robbins to serve as a District-Wide Substitute Nurse as well as to allow for additional time to complete her duties as Head Nurse.

Billy Morrison for a vacant Custodial Position at the Intermediate School.

  • Mr. Morrison spent the past ten years working at TA.

Kristina Nordyke for a Paraprofessional Position at the ELC.

  • Mrs. Nordyke worked for OPAA in the Mount Vernon District from 2017-2021.

Christina Penland for a vacant Special Education Paraprofessional position at MVMS.

  • Mrs. Penland has been serving as a Substitute Teacher for the District since March of 2022 including a long-term assignment in Sixth Grade ELA.
  • This is to replace Kalli Robison who is moving into the Middle School Secretary Position.

Madisyn Ross as a one-on-one Special Education Paraprofessional at the ELC in the 2023-2024 school year.

  • Ms. Ross has been a long-term substitute in this role since January.

Lisa Wilson for the vacant Nurse Position at the Elementary School in the 2023-2024 school year.

  • Mrs. Wilson has been serving the District as a Paraprofessional at MVES since September 2021.
  • She is an LPN with 27 years of nursing experience including ten years as a school nurse in the Hurley School District.
  • This is to replace Abby Schubert who resigned from this position last month.
